How to Prepare AI Art for Printing

By the ClearPix team · Oct 25, 2026 · 1 min read

Export the highest-resolution original from your AI generator, then upscale once for the print size you need. A 1024 px image at 4× becomes 4096 px—about 13.6 inches wide at 300 DPI. Upscaling preserves composition and palette, but it cannot repair malformed hands, garbled text or missing details.

Calculate the print size before choosing a scale

At 300 DPI, the approximate maximum width is:

Input ClearPix scale Output Width at 300 DPI
1024 px 2× 2048 px 6.8 in / 17.3 cm
1024 px 4× 4096 px 13.6 in / 34.7 cm

These are pixel-derived estimates, not a guarantee of print quality. Ask your print shop for its required dimensions and DPI. A large print can work at a lower DPI, but faces, fine lines and text need closer inspection.

Steps

  1. Download the original PNG from Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, DALL·E or your generator instead of using a compressed chat preview.
  2. Fix hands, text and generator artifacts first. Super-resolution is the final enlargement step, not a repair tool.
  3. Open the ClearPix AI art upscaler and choose 2× for web layouts or 4× for print and full-width 4K displays.
  4. Compare line art and painterly texture. Lower sharpening if grain or halos become obvious, then export the PNG.

What not to expect

  • No new composition, palette or subject changes.
  • No reliable correction of malformed anatomy or text.
  • No recovery of detail that the generator never produced.
  • No guarantee that a small source will look good at poster size.

Flat color and clean line art usually enlarge more predictably than dense painterly texture. For current Real-ESRGAN output examples and downloadable benchmark data, use the Quality Dashboard.
