Upscale a WhatsApp photo without losing quality

WhatsApp shrinks photos before sending, so a saved picture often arrives at 800–1600 px with visible compression. ClearPix enlarges that file 2× or 4× with Real-ESRGAN super-resolution, rebuilding edges and reducing blockiness instead of just stretching pixels. It is free, needs no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser — the photo is never uploaded, and the model works offline once cached.

Chat photos lose resolution twice: the camera compresses the shot, then WhatsApp compresses it again for transport. Super-resolution will not recover the discarded data, but it makes compressed chat images look clean again at normal viewing and posting sizes.

What is AI super-resolution?

Real-ESRGAN is a neural network trained on real-world image degradation. Unlike a simple resize, it reconstructs plausible high-frequency detail — sharper edges, recovered texture, cleaned-up compression artifacts. ClearPix runs the model in overlapping tiles on your own GPU (WebGPU) or CPU (WebAssembly), so even large images process safely without any server.

When to use 2× vs 4×

  • 4×— small thumbnails, compressed social-media saves, AI-art drafts.
  • 2×— moderate enlargements where you want a natural, less sharpened look.
  • For very large sources, downsize first and let the model rebuild the detail.

Only process images you own or have explicit permission to modify.

How it works

1

Save the highest-quality copy you have

Use the original file if possible, or ask the sender to resend it as a document — WhatsApp compresses photos sent as regular images.

2

Drop it into the upscaler

PNG, JPG or WebP up to 2048 px on the longest side (1400 px without WebGPU). Processing happens locally in the tab.

3

Pick 2× or 4× and download

4× works best for heavily compressed chat photos; 2× looks more natural on already-clean images. Export is a full-resolution PNG.

Your file never leaves your device. All AI processing runs locally in your browser on your own hardware — there is no upload, no queue, and no copy stored on any server. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and everything still works.

Engineering deep-diveBrowser Image Upscaling: How We Got 4× Super-Resolution 14× Faster — Then Made It Slower on PurposeTwo complaints arrived in the same week. The first was about time: upscaling a 2048px photo took nine seconds, even on the WebGPU path, and users on weaker hardware saw the progress bar crawl. The second was about taste: the results looked over-cooked — skin turned plastic, edges grew light halos, and if your source was a JPEG, the compression blocks came back louder than before. One complaint asked us to go faster; the other, if you squinted, asked us to add less. This is the story of how we chased the first one honestly, and why the fix for the second one ended up being a dial that gives some of that speed back.Read the deep-dive
