Compress a GIF without losing the joke

ClearPix compresses animated GIFs entirely in your browser. It decodes each frame, optionally lowers the frame rate, resizes the image and re-quantizes the palette to 2–256 colors, then writes a smaller standard GIF. You see the exact before and after size and can tune the three levers until the file fits. Free, no sign-up, no upload.

Shrink animated GIFs by dropping frames, resizing and reducing the color palette — right in your browser. No upload, no queue, no watermark.

How GIF compression works

GIF is a palette format with no inter-frame compression: every frame is stored separately. ClearPix attacks size from three angles — drop frames (lower frame rate), resize (fewer pixels per frame) and reduce colors (smaller palette). The output stays a standard GIF that plays anywhere.

Which lever to pull first

  • Frame rate — the biggest win for screen recordings and long memes; 15 fps usually still looks smooth.
  • Colors — 64–128 colors is often indistinguishable for flat illustrations and stickers.
  • Width — halving the width cuts pixels by 4×; best for oversized GIFs.

GIF compression questions

How do I make a GIF smaller for free?

Drop the GIF, lower the frame rate, pick a smaller width or fewer colors, then press Compress. ClearPix re-encodes the animation in your browser and shows the exact before and after size. No sign-up, no upload and no watermark.

Does compressing a GIF reduce its quality?

It can. Dropping frames changes smoothness, resizing softens detail and fewer colors introduce banding. The tool shows the result before you download, so you can raise the settings until it looks right.

What settings work for Discord or WhatsApp?

Most chat apps cap GIFs at 8–10 MB. Start with 15 fps and 128 colors; if it is still too big, halve the width. Emoji-style GIFs often survive 64 colors without visible loss.

Are my GIFs uploaded?

Never. Decoding and re-encoding happen locally in your browser — open the network panel and check: nothing is sent. The tool works offline after the page has loaded.

Why is the compressed GIF sometimes larger?

Re-encoding can add overhead if the source was already optimized. If the result is bigger, the tool warns you — keep the original, or try fewer colors and a lower frame rate.

Only compress GIFs you own or have permission to edit.
