Upscale anime images 2× or 4×, privately

ClearPix upscales anime screenshots, illustrations and wallpapers 2× or 4× directly in your browser. It uses Real-ESRGAN general-x4v3, not a separate anime-specific model, to enlarge flat colors and line art while preserving source transparency. Files are never uploaded and no account is required. Fine lines, small details and screentone can soften, so compare the real output before downloading.

Enlarge anime screenshots, illustrations, line art and wallpapers without sending the image to a server. The local Real-ESRGAN pipeline runs on your device, with scene-specific settings and public test crops instead of unsupported “anime-specific” claims.

What is AI super-resolution?

Real-ESRGAN is a neural network trained on real-world image degradation. Unlike a simple resize, it reconstructs plausible high-frequency detail — sharper edges, recovered texture, cleaned-up compression artifacts. ClearPix runs the model in overlapping tiles on your own GPU (WebGPU) or CPU (WebAssembly), so even large images process safely without any server.

When to use 2× vs 4×

  • 4×— small thumbnails, compressed social-media saves, AI-art drafts.
  • 2×— moderate enlargements where you want a natural, less sharpened look.
  • For very large sources, downsize first and let the model rebuild the detail.

Only process images you own or have explicit permission to modify.

How it works

1

Choose the highest-quality anime source

Use the original PNG, JPG or WebP rather than a compressed chat preview. Sources up to 2048 px are accepted (1400 px without WebGPU), and transparent PNG alpha is preserved at the output dimensions.

2

Select 2× or 4× and compare

Use 2× for a moderate enlargement or 4× for small images and 4K layouts. Lower sharpening if pencil texture, JPEG noise or edge halos become obvious. Inspect hair, eyes, thin lines and small accessories at 100%.

3

Download when the details hold up

Export the enlarged image with no account or export watermark. The result predicts plausible detail; it does not recover lost lines, preserve every screentone dot or fix source compression.

Recommended settings

  • • Use 2× for moderate enlargement and 4× for small sources or 4K layouts.
  • • Start with the default sharpening, then lower it for pencil texture, JPEG noise or visible halos.
  • • Check thin lines, eyes, hair, small accessories and screentone at 100% before exporting.
  • • Use the highest-quality source available and remove unwanted overlays before upscaling.

What to expect

  • • Fine lines, small details and screentone can soften or change; preservation-grade output is not promised.
  • • Super-resolution predicts plausible detail but cannot restore missing lines or repair source compression.
  • • The current suite has no licensed modern animation frames or comprehensive gradient-banding coverage.
  • • 2× uses the quality-first 4× SR + downsampling path, so it does not offer a separate cheap inference mode.

Frequently asked questions

Does this page use an anime-specific AI model?

No. It currently uses Real-ESRGAN general-x4v3, the same compact general-purpose model as the main image upscaler. Our 45-case anime baseline found it usable with disclosed limits, so there is no second model download or unsupported “anime engine” claim.

Will line art and screentone stay unchanged?

Not necessarily. Ordinary line art can enlarge well, but faint lines, tiny details and regular screentone dots may soften or change. Inspect the fixed crops and your own result, especially for print or archival work.

Are transparent PNG backgrounds preserved?

Yes. The pipeline reconstructs source alpha at the output size instead of forcing every pixel opaque. All 24 non-opaque cases in the current anime suite have alpha MAE 0. RGB in fully transparent pixels is normalized to avoid hidden color leakage.

Should I choose 2× or 4× for an anime wallpaper?

Choose 2× for a moderate increase and 4× when a small source needs substantially more pixels for a large display. ClearPix computes 4× super-resolution first and downsamples for 2× because the cheaper half-resolution shortcut reduced quality in our tests.

Are my anime images uploaded?

No. The model runs locally through ONNX Runtime Web using WebGPU or WASM. Your source and result are not sent to ClearPix for processing. The model is downloaded once and cached, so supported workflows can continue offline after the first load.

Engineering deep-diveCan a General Real-ESRGAN Model Handle Anime? Our 45-Case Browser BaselineThe answer is yes—with a qualification that matters more than the headline: ClearPix's current realesr-general-x4v3 pipeline produced usable anime enlargements, but it also softened faint lines, small accessories, and screentone.
